Salient Achievements
Development of pathogenic bacteria profile of rainbow trout farms of Uttarakhand (58 bacterial isolates), Himachal Pradesh (34 bacterial isolates) & Sikkim (19 bacterial isolates). No OIE listed pathogen has been detected during the study
Documentation of parasite diseases like white spot (Ich), Argulosis and Trichodiniasis; bacterial disease i.e. bacterial gill diseases, exophthalmia, tail rot, gill rot & different stages of corneal opacity and fungal disease i.e. cotton wool disease in Rainbow trout, Golden Mahseer, Snowtrout, Chocolate Mahseer & other minor carps incoldwater aquaculture practices
Isolation & characterization of 4 isolates of gram positive bacteria pathogens of national importance Lactococcus garvieae (GenBank accession no: KM 604701, KM 604702, KM 604703 and KM 604704), a zoonotic pathogen from diseased rainbow trout in trout farms of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, showing typical symptoms of lactococcosis; unilateral exophthalmia, inflammation and swollen vent, petechial haemorrhages in viscera, focal haemorrhages and swelling in liver
Detection of other gram positive bacteria pathogens Carnobacterium (12 isolates) & Corynebacterium (8 isolates) from rainbow trout farms of Himachal Pradesh & Sikkim
Detection of 5 green-yellow pigmented strains of Pseudomonas koreensis (Lab strain TPEB02, accession number: JX390644) in golden mahseer eye, demonstrating opacification of the spectacle in conjugation with increased prominence of vessels. A preliminary experimental infection study using golden mahseer fingerlings (11.5 + 3.2 g, n = 21) indicated that 12hr cultures of P. koreensis was virulent to fishes. This Pseudomonas koreensis is 1st reported from Korea to cause diseases in fish
Detection of orange pigmented gram negative, rod shaped Chryseobacterium scophthalmum (13 isolates) in infected gills of Golden Mahseers collected from Bhimtal Lake. This bacterium has been 1st reported to cause disease in Turbot in Scotland
Isolated and characterised pathogenic oomycetes water moulds Saprolegnia australis (3 isolates) from golden Mahseer in Uttarakhand
Documentation on use of aqua-drugs, antibiotics, chemicals, disinfectants and vaccines in mid hill carps and rainbow trout farming’s of Uttarakhand (45 farms), Himachal Pradesh (26 farms), Sikkim (68 farms), Arunachal Pradesh (30 farms), Tripura (62 farms), Meghalaya (65 farms) & Manipur (45 farms)
Screening of probiotic bacterial strains; Lactococcus lactis (7 isolates), Bacillus pumilus (2 isolates), Enterococcus fascium (2 isolates), Enterococcus durans (4 isolates) & Lactobacillus delbrueckii (1 isolate)from coldwater aquaculture practices to control pathogenic bacteria infections as well as improvement of water quality in culture practices
